The cancer must be among the most dreaded diseases and more common (unfortunately) of our time. The money has been invested in finding new ways to treat and research to find a cure, is abundant. The results of these studies, moreover, have not always been positive.

Breast cancer
However, a few weeks ago a group of American scientists made a breakthrough in the fight against cancer that can mean a great contribution to the cause.

According to information released, it was possible to isolate a gene involved in 70% of breast cancers have more aggressive and more resistant to hormonal treatments that are currently applied in medicine.

The procedure applied researchers from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts, responsible for the discovery, was to inject cancer cells with fragments of genetic material able to disable, turn other genes, the intention was to detect which ones are needed development of a tumor.

The results are a big step for the development of new medicines against cancer: it was determined that there is a gene – the PHGDH – which is extremely active in the types of tumors that we are referring.

This feature causes changes in the chemical composition of the cancer cell that produces amino acid serine, which makes the cancer less treatable. It is certainly a contribution to the welfare of many of the women in the future to develop a malignant tumor in the breast.

The advance of medicine is undeniable in certain fields. Now, a team of scientists from the Institute of Technology has developed a device for diseases such as cataracts through a next-generation mobile phone.

Altered by the fact that 250 million people suffering from blindness due to medical reasons that could have been avoided, this group of scientists got down to work to adapt a device to avoid mobile phone and taken to be tested in machines costing more than 3,500 euros.

After working for 10 years with 51 000 485 people between 50 to 64 years, scientists found that 1,881 individuals suffered some point strokes. For them it became clear that the physical health of those who participated in the study suffers each 10 additional decibels to the traffic noise. Under these conditions the risk of stroke increased by 10%. Among the elderly of 65, it increases by 27%.

Despite the conclusions reached by the aforementioned team of doctors and Danish scientists, cities and its noise is a reality, as well as diseases associated with their lifestyle and its benefits. Ultimately, the health of the people runs risk in any place.

With reservations that such research requires, especially when found in an early stage, a group of British scientists has managed to transform one type of cells similar to stem cells in hearts of adult mice to function as heart muscle, which represents a breakthrough for coronary patients.

The main conclusion from this study that, sure, will be talking about medicine is that in future it could develop a drug to those hearts that have been damaged by a heart to regenerate themselves.
<!--

Until now, patients suffering from heart had no choice but to turn the pacemaker or an organ transplant. Therefore, this study led by medicine expert Paul Riley and published in the journal Nature this week has been hailed as a ray of hope for people with severe coronary disease.

So far, it had reduced the number of people who have heart attack, but the people who were not suffering from any improvement in their welfare. Now, this may change since the zones are dead after the attack could be recovered with this medicine.
<!--

The scientists discovered more than 20 years ago how to get stem cells from mouse embryos. In late 1998, after intensive experimental work, a group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin (USA) won the first culture of human embryonic stem cells. From this moment, the cell ancestors have been presented as the great therapeutic hope of the new century.

Whatever the source, stem cells face a common problem in laboratory culture. For these cells to proliferate to obtain sufficient material for therapeutic use have to be grown under very specific conditions.
<!--

In stem cells, we find two types: embryonic and adult. The first is also known as pluripotent: Currently used as a model to study embryonic development and to understand what are the mechanisms and signals that allow to reach a pluripotent cell to form any fully differentiated cell of the body.

Adult stem cell known in an adult so far about 20 different types of stem cells, which are responsible for tissue regeneration in continuous wear (such as skin or blood) or damaged (eg, liver). Its limited capacity to generate more specialized cells. Hematopoietic stem cells of bone marrow (responsible for the formation of blood) are the most known and used in clinic for some time.
<!--

At the same bone, but also in umbilical cord blood, peripheral blood and in body fat have found another type of stem cell called mesenchymal which can differentiate into numerous cell types of the three embryonic derivatives (muscular, vascular, nervous, hematopoietic, bone, etc). Although not yet its physiological importance has been able to be determined abundant clinical trials are underway to replace damaged tissues (heart) for derivatives of these cells.

IELCAP international study, published recently and included the participation of the University Hospital of Navarra and the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), University of Navarra, and the recent research conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and funded by the U.S. government, endorse the importance of this diagnostic test in the increased survival of patients with lung cancer.

“We are questioning many things about the changes that are needed”, he added, while also has stated that “if the government does not observe this issue with other eyes will be missing a great opportunity to reduce deaths from a most deadly diseases of our time”.

In addition, the researcher, following the American findings, the debate focuses not only on scientific evidence of the effectiveness of the test if not the cost of the possible implementation of programs ‘screening’ of lung cancer and the criteria to be followed to select populations at risk.

“The question of cost depends on whether there is short or long term. Look at short term, obviously, it is necessary to make investments, not expenses but investments. But in the long term become a savings and to deal with lung cancer in advanced stage is much more expensive and less effective than early detection. Therefore, if the authorities observe this issue in the long term, consider investing in these programs is certainly a saving”, he warned.

Therefore, the expert urges governments to design programs for early detection of lung cancer for the general population. From the standpoint of medical recommends people at high risk of contracting the disease, smokers or former smokers to seriously consider the benefits they can offer this type of evidence.
