What is otitis media? Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear almost always accompanied infection that occurs abruptly and causes:

otitis media

  • Ear pain, usually on one side.
  • The person who has it has the feeling that his ear is plugged (hearing loss).
  • Fever, especially in children under 2 years.
  • Otitis is sometimes anticipated by a cold, sinusitis or nasal mucus increased.
  • The first presenting symptom is clogged ear that can not be open to swallowing. Then comes the pain, which can be mild or severe.
  • The ear begins to ooze a liquid (pus) through the ear canal, called a discharge when the eardrum is punctured, releasing the infected fluid inside the middle ear.

When the ear begins to ooze, pain no longer exists because it ends the pressure on the eardrum. If the treatment is successful, the eardrum will close completely and the symptoms are depleted to then disappear in days.

The hearing is the last symptom to retire, which may extend to 30 days.

What is the treatment of otitis media?

  • If there is a sustained infection can be treated with Ab (amoxicillin) 1 month or longer.
  • If the reason is allergy can be treated with antihistamines, environmental control and vaccines.
  • If there is vegetation that oppresses the eustachian tube is necessary to a removal of them.
  • If due to various causes and treatment is difficult for a referral is made in the eardrum (myringotomy), through a plastic tube in place so that the liquid pressure does not impede hearing.

Prevention for otitis media:

  • No smoking in the home.
  • Do not go to daycare.
  • Arrange the environment in families with allergies.
  • Properly treat ear infections.
